When you’re doing any sort of physical activity, the chances that you’re going to hurt yourself are high. You could try as much as you can to be as careful as possible, but at some point, you will get injured. It has nothing to do with how you do the activity and everything to do with the laws of probability. You can’t expect to do something a hundred times and have it go right on every occasion. Now, you can easily reduce your risk of injury by using the right technique for the activity in which you decided to participate. It’s natural to not know how to do something right the first time around. That’s what practice is for. You have to put in the time performing certain parts of your activity the right way to develop the muscle memory for the proper technique. Eventually, you won’t even have to think about what you’re doing. It will become second nature to you. The saying “Practice makes perfect” might sound great, but it doesn’t mean anything. You could practice doing something the wrong way every hour for the rest of your life. You would still be doing things the wrong way. An effective practice regimen comes when you have studied the activity for many years and have it perfected. Until then, you need to go back to the drawing board until you get it right.

Every physical activity has a certain amount of technique associated with it. You could run the way that feels most natural, but it won’t be the right way. Your running technique could cause you injury and make it more difficult to run for long periods of time. An experienced track or physical education coach could monitor how you run and tell you what you could do it better.  Football is a sport with a lot of intricacies. The casual observer could look at it and think it’s nothing more than a bunch of muscle bound guys running around and slamming each other into the ground. While there’s definitely a lot of that going on, there’s so much more to the game. Each position has a significant amount of technique involved with it. Quarterbacks have to know more about plays and what the other players are doing than even the coach. Running backs have to see the spots between the defenders and be able to time how long it will take for someone to close the space between them and make the tackle. The same goes for pretty much any other position on the field. If none of these players knew how to fill their role the right way, the risk of injury for them would be so much higher.

Don’t let the chance of injury prevent you from working out. Some people psych themselves out because they’re too worried about getting injured. Injury plays a part in every facet of life. Most of us have gotten injured walking down the street or doing some other normal activity. You can’t let this rare possibility ruin your physical activity routine. Before you decide to pack a picnic lunch and head to the beach, there are a few things you might want to consider for your own safety’s sake. Your skin is especially susceptible to the sun’s rays because during the summer, most of it is exposed. Everyone has heard about how harmful the sun can be, but not everyone really knows what to do about it. It is unreasonable to ask people to stay inside all day to protect your skin! So what can you do? Here are a few tips on how to keep your skin safe this summer while still having fun in the sun!

The first rule is sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen! There are dozens of studies that prove that sunscreen can help keep your skin safe from developing harmful diseases and cancers due to exposure to the sun. There is no reason to leave the house without applying sunscreen first. Even on overcast days, the sun’s rays are out and powerful as ever. When you risk your skin’s health by going out in the sun without wearing any sort of protection, then you are risking skin cancer for a small convenience of not applying the lotion or spray. Does that sound like a fair trade to you? Of course it doesn’t, so wear your sunscreen!

Along the same lines, applying moisturizer to your skin daily is a great way to keep your skin looking and feeling healthy. Even when you wear sunscreen, the sun is likely to dry out the natural moisture from your skin. For this reason, it might be necessary to apply a little more lotion than normal during the summer months. In addition to lotion, you might want to consider wearing after-shave balm. After-shave balm is a great product that captures moisture into your skin after it has been shaven and is likely to dry out anyway. When freshly shaven skin is exposed to heat and dryness, it increases the risk of razor burn and other unpleasant things. Adding a little more lotion to your daily routine and using after shave balm will give your skin the extra boost that it needs during the summer.

If a tan is what you are looking for, then you should know that the sun isn’t the only way for you to get it! Sun tanning can be very harmful to the skin. Luckily, there are a number of at home skin tanners that will give your skin the same golden glow without you having to wait hours in the sun and damaging your skin for good.

 

Return of the Mask

With the economy down, people are going to the spa less and less and are looking for home recipes that do the same thing. Facials and face scrubs are the biggest thing that people are wanting to do at home. Pedicures and manicures require a certain skill to do, but following a recipe for a face mask is something that anyone can do. Here is a step-by-step process for an at-home spaexperience.

  1. Cleanse. What you need to do before anything else is wash you face with a basic, gentle cleanser. If you wash your face in the morning or at night, then you can just use that. You do not want something that is going to dry your skin out because that will make the rest of the experience counter-active.
  2. Exfoliate. Exfoliating is something that everyone should do on a regular basis, it includes scrubbing off the dead skin and allowing your skin to be renewed. Many spas use expensive methods of doing this, but there are much simpler ways to accomplish the same goal. You can use white or brown sugar as a scrub or baking soda if you want a finer grain. Take the sugar or baking soda after wetting your face and, using small circles, rub it onto your face and then rinse. Do not use salt (some websites recommend it) because it dries your skin out and makes it much less responsive to your mask. You can add little touches to your scrub to make it unique and increase the feeling of being a part of the spa. Some of those touches are coconut oil, essential oil, and other similar scents and flavors.
  3. Mask. This is the most subjective part of any “spa” routine. Each person has unique skin, tastes, and needs. Some people have certain allergies and cannot use specific ingredients. Make sure that if you are using an ingredient that you have not come in contact with before, that you first spread a small amount on a patch on your arm the day before so you can see if you are allergic or not. There are many, many websites that you can use to find recipes, all you need to type into a search engine is “homemade facials”.
  4. Moisturize. After rinsing your facial off, you need to moisturize your skin. Use a light moisturizer so that your skin is not weighed down and that way you do not counteract the facial that you just did.

 

There are a few additional steps that you can take depending on your routine. If you are doing this during the day, then it would be good to apply some sunscreen on top of the moisturizer. Sunscreen is KEY. It will keep your skin healthier than the most expensive wash and lotion. An important thing to remember is that your skin will be a little extra sensitive and therefore you should not apply make up on your skin because it will not respond well.

It Suits You

After that 2012 resolution to hit the gym much more than you have, you want to be able to show off all of your hard work. The teeny-weeny shorts are not good for everyone, despite how small you are. What you need to do is find a swimsuit that allows you to rock your new body while keeping things classy. Here are some things to keep in mind as you go shopping for suits.

For those of you that have a large chest, it is important that your swimming suit has support. People think that support is just for older women or their grandmothers, but this is not true at all! Support can make you feel so much better in a suit and you look great too. Victoria’s Secret has some suits that would be good, support wise, and would look good on you as well. Their Magicsuit line is especially fitting for a flattering look. The important thing is that you do not embellish your bust line because that will only make you look top heavy.

If you have a small chest, then you can play around with ruffles and patterns and such on your suits. Even a bikini can have a fun and funky top, but it will not make you look top heavy, only a bit more balanced as far as ratios go. Polka dots are good as far as patterns go. Target actually has some great suits for small busted women, their halter top bikinis have the perfect amount of ruching and the halter design emphasizes the shoulders and chest (something that would not be good for a person with a large chest). Halter is also good for people who are pear-shaped in body type because it makes the shoulders appear stronger and draws attention away from the hips and thighs. Also, vertical patterns are ideal because they lengthen the torso and emphasize the vertical image of your body and not the larger, horizontal view.

Plus-size women have much difficulty finding suits. Do not be discouraged! There are so many good and attractive suits out there for you, you just need to know what style is best. Wrapping around the front, even the faux kind, slims you and gives you a very powerful definition for you waist. Vertical patterns are good for you as well, anything to give you a better, longer line. For full coverage, including your bottom, go for something with a small swim skirt because that can help to hide some details down that way and across your front. Some swim skirts even go up farther on your torso which help to control the muffin-top look that everyone experiences.

Everyone else, it really is up to you now to find a suit that is good for you. Everyone is different and everyone’s body is subject to change. It really depends on what you feel best in as to what you feel comfortable in at the pool. The most attractive quality is confidence, so if you do not feel like you can rock a suit then you can’t. However, if you feel like a million dollar bill in a suit, then you will have the confidence to back up the suit and you will be much more attractive in that.

Recovering from Surgery

Undergoing a surgical procedure of any kind can be a stressful and painful experience. Thankfully, modern medical interventions are available to minimize pain both before and after surgeries but there will still be issues of pain and discomfort and these can be greatly exacerbated by improper aftercare. It is imperative that the recovering patient listens to and follows the instructions of the attending physicians and nurses that are assisting with the recovery process. Depending on the extent and severity of the surgical procedure some patients may be able to leave shortly after the surgery (this is generally referred to as an outpatient surgery) or the patient may be required to stay in the hospital for an extended period so that the medical team can closely monitor the after effects of the procedure.

Whether at home or in the hospital it is a good idea to have comforting activities and items nearby so that the recovery process can be as easy as possible.  The patient will be experiencing a wide range of physical and emotional symptoms that are brought on by the intensity of surgery and the medications that will be prescribed for dealing with pain and other such issues. One of the most commonly reported side effects of prescription pain killers, administered either orally or intravenously, is that of nausea. Because of the extent of medicines that are already being administered to the recovering patient many opt for the use of BioBands for their relief from nausea. Other comforting items should include calming activities to relieve boredom as sitting in a hospital room can be tedious. Some patients may sleep a great deal and others may stay awake despite the sedative effects of the pain killers. The best activities for patients include books and magazines for reading, crossword puzzles, word games, and any other type of written puzzles like Sudoku, jigsaw puzzles, knitting, or any other sedentary activity that the patient may enjoy. Most hospitals have televisions in patient’s rooms and they can be hooked up to portable DVD players or other devices so that DVDs can be watched as well.

The patient’s comfort is paramount for recovery; however, there is also an amount of discomfort that is necessary for proper healing. It is recommended that patient’s get out of bed after surgery, as long as the doctors attending the case give the patient the go-ahead. The patient may only be asked to walk short distances at first or they doctors and nurses may want more strenuous activity, either way it is vital to proper recovery of the body that patients follow the orders of their medical team. Moving after surgery can keep muscles from atrophying as well as keeping scar tissues from hardening to such a degree that would cause loss of motion after certain surgical procedures. Still, it is equally as important for patients to not over do their physical movements. Some movement is needed but patients should avoid lifting heavy objects, unapproved exercise routines, and any other physical activity that may stress the body. There is a delicate balance that must be maintained throughout the recovery process and the doctors and nurses involved in each individual case are best able to dictate the steps a patient should take during the recovery process.

Plunging Necklines

Rules are meant to be broken – especially by the young for whom most fashion is created.

Today many young women, and I am including those up to the age of 40, seem to be happy wearing plunging necklines for everyday wear. What happens if you want to look smart but for whatever reason, you do not feel comfortable wearing a plunging neckline? What do you do?

Here are three modern dressing tips for business and professional women over 40 so that you do not have to miss out on wearing some lovely modern fashions. These dressing tips can also apply to girls and women of any age who feel that the plunge is not for you.

Wear a Cami or Singlet Top Underneath

If you find a dress or top that plunges past your comfort point, consider buying or wearing a smooth-fitting cami or singlet top underneath. Both of these look smart and you can match, blend or contrast with the colour or pattern to your dress, skirt, pants or jeans. A fitted cami gives you the modesty you want. Make sure that the cami or singlet covers just the top of your bust. One that ends close to your collarbone looks old-fashioned.

If you prefer a cami to a singlet top, ignore those that have stretch straps as these do not hold the cami firmly in place. The cami can slip over time and you are back to revealing more of the plunge than you may prefer. This can attract unwanted comments from some men, especially if you are short like me. Yes, I learnt that lesson from experience. Stretch camis with built-in bras are a better alternative. If you want good support, wear a proper bra under these camis. As long as no one will see your bra straps, it does not matter.

I am not a fan of lace-top camis for a professional or business look as I believe they come across as either too casual or too sexual for a professional situation.

Be careful of beige and skin-toned camis or singlet tops as your neckline will still look plunging from a distance. Beige and skin-toned camis are great to wear under normal white tops, blouses or shirts when you do not want your bra to be visible.

Wear a Strapless Cami or Boob Tube Underneath

Some women wear boob tubes or strapless camis under revealing V necklines and low sleeveless underarms. You see the cami at your bustline, under your arms and across your back. Try them to see if you feel comfortable wearing them. If you have to keep hitching them up, do not buy them.

Ignore Plunging Necklines

Sometimes you just have to say – it is lovely but not for me. Even when you were young you rejected some fashion styles as not you. Be prepared to reject some plunging neckline styles and go look for something else.

Modest flattering swimwear can often be hard to find. One-piece swimwear and bikinis plunge a lot. Check out one-shouldered designs or swimwear with sheer front inserts that give a veiled glimpse of a plunge rather than an obvious view.

Bonus Tip

Try a classy back neckline plunge for one outfit only. The depth of the plunge is your choice, depending on whether you are wearing the top or dress in a professional, casual or night-time situation. A plunging back is unusual enough to be stylish, individual and timeless.
