Protecting Yourself from Prostate Cancer

The threat of getting cancer is always looming above the heads of people in this country who are constantly being bombarded with information regarding the different kinds of cancer and the various ways that it can harm them and their families. Cancer is a very difficult thing to deal with, and no one wants to have to go through the treatment and processes that come along with trying to heal themselves from cancer. Among the many cancers that are hurting people today is prostate cancer. At the Prostate Cancer Foundation, people are treated and helped through their journey with cancer. The folks at the Prostate Cancer Foundation want to communicate the various ways that people can help themselves prevent prostate cancer from happening. While there is no sure way to prevent prostate cancer, there are a number of factors that will lead to a healthier lifestyle overall and decrease the likelihood of getting any form of cancer.

Eating a healthy and well balanced diet is of the utmost importance in maintaining a healthy lifestyle and warding off cancer before it has a chance to form. When you put nutritious food into your body, you become strengthened and vitalized. Not only does this increase your stamina and endurance throughout the day, but it helps you to have a healthier disposition and function well in every area of your life. Eating healthy is a matter of making sure you don’t get too much fat in your diet. Fat stores in your body and creates unneeded excess material that cannot be used in a functional way. When you eat too much fat, you slow your body’s natural processes down to the point where simple bodily functions can be difficult for your body to carry out. This is unhealthy and it encourages disease and cancer. When you do eat fat in your diet, try to make most of the fat you eat come from plants rather than animals. Plant fats are easier for your body to break down, and animal fats are of a consistency that is very similar to human fat, which causes even more build up in your body and decreases your body’s natural ability to function.

In addition to eating a low fat diet, exercising does a great deal to promote health and increase life expectancy. When you exercise, you are giving your body the chance to use its natural forces in a way that doesn’t otherwise happen. Exercising, combined with a healthy diet, will help you to maintain a healthy weight, which in itself decreases your chance of cancer. If you have any questions about how you can protect yourself from cancer, call your doctor today and make an appointment to talk about your options.

Help, I Keep Clogging My Drain With My Hair!

One of the most constant issues people experience with their bathroom drains is clogs in the form of hair. This is, unfortunately, one of those problems that can’t often be helped and it is quite disgusting to deal with. Regardless of what you may try, hair will most likely always find its way into some drain or another and, in time, end up forming a huge clog. However, there are ways you can fix this and even a few things you can do to keep hair out of your drains.

There are several solutions to the hair problem. One of the more obvious ones is to install a hair catcher over your drain. This screen shields the drain from the hairs that you may shed while taking a shower, catching them and keeping them from finding their way down into the plumbing where they can create the beginnings of a clog. The only downside is that you do have to clean the hair catcher after every shower. There really is not a way to get out of dealing with that hair, unfortunately.

Alternatively, you could try catching the hair and holding onto it during your shower so it does not end up in the drain. You could also try brushing out your hair thoroughly before each shower to lessen the amount of hair that ends up loose and in the water. Neither of these options completely eliminates the problem, however, and naturally this advice is no good if you already have a clog! You can try to prevent a future clog from forming by clearing your drain of hair at least once a month or so.  Do not use toxic, commercial drain cleaners to do this, however. If used too often, these can end up damaging your pipes, which is far worse than any clog. Instead, try a mixture of baking soda and vinegar. Follow it up with six to eight cups of hot water about a half an hour after pouring the original mixture into the drain.

If you have a clog already, there are several things you could try to clear it. As mentioned earlier, it is best to avoid commercial drain cleaners due to the corrosion they can cause over time. You should first attempt to pull the clog out or dislodge it through some other means. There is also the option of using a plunger, but if all else fails it is best to call a professional to handle it. You can learn more here about what a plumber can do to help you when you are at a loss for how to handle the problem. Chances are, if you can’t fix it yourself, the problem is more complex than you first thought and should be handled by someone who has experience in the matter.

Is Invisalign Worth the Cost?

Is invisalign worth the cost? The short answer is yes! But let Guerra dental, an Invisalign provider, tell you why they think it’s worth it.

For starters the cost of Invisalign on average is around $5000 and the average starting cost for common metal braces is also $5000, but the difference is that the cost for braces may go up based on the type of hardware needed. For instance are you just getting your teeth straighter or will your metal braces need to bring teeth lower in the gums, adjust your bite drastically, adjust the alignment of your jaw bones, widen your jaw, reduce an over or under-bite? Sometimes braces can cost more if you have circumstances like this.

With Invisalign there are generally no surprises. You won’t need to go to the orthodontist each time wondering what new wiring or metal hardware will be glued to your teeth next. Instead, you will simply be fitted with a new clear retainer and will know exactly what to expect each time. Not only can this be more cost effective, but it can also reduce anxiety and pain dramatically.

Pain associated with any type of dental work is unpleasant, however, with Invisalign there are no rough, sharp, pointy or hard metal objects. Instead, you just get a flexible, clear, plastic retainer that’s literally invisible on your teeth. Invisalign isn’t completely without discomfort. You will feel tightness each time you are fitted with a new retainer, but this is worlds away from the pain associated with metal braces.

Often many people are embarrassed about their crooked smiles but fear the appearance of metal braces even more, especially once they’re teenagers or adults. This doesn’t need to be the case. Feel great about your smile even while it’s being straightened, and with Invisalign this could be as early as 6 to 18 months! Imagines what Invisalign will do for you!

Too Skinny? Here Are Some Tips for Safely Gaining Weight

A lot of attention is paid in society to those that want to lose weight. With a national obsession with thinness it can be frustrating to find yourself on the other side of the weight issue. The fact is that there are many individuals in the world that feel they are too skinny and that wish they could hold on to a few extra pounds. There are many reasons why some people have a hard time retaining weight. Some people just have the genetics that create a high running metabolism, others may have chronic health issues that contribute to their advanced thinness and some just don’t know the ways in which to eat and exercise that might give them the additional weight they crave.  has found some simple steps for those in need of weight gain to follow and reach their goals more quickly.

Healthy Weight Gain Step 1: KEEP A FOOD JOURNAL

Before you make any major life changes take a week or two to just observe your habits. Write down everything you eat in a day and keep track of the calories assigned to each food item. This can be a bit tedious but it is only for a week or two, so you can endure! Don’t judge yourself or try to doctor your entries by eating things you wouldn’t normally eat. It is imperative to any lasting success that you are honest with yourself from the start. Once you have determined what your average daily caloric intake is you can plan accordingly. For healthy weight gain it is recommended that you add 250 to 500 calories to your daily intake.

Healthy Weight Gain Step 2: SNACK, SNACK, SNACK!

Snacking on healthy but calorie rich items such as nuts, olives, and avocado can boost your calorie intake without making you feel like you have to stuff your face at every meal. Yogurt is also a good option. It is important to keep your food options on the healthier side because gorging on high calorie junk food might help you gain weight but it won’t be the kind of weight you are hoping for and it will seriously mess with your body’s ability to function.

Instead of trying to revamp your entire dietary life find ways to add calories to the foods you already enjoy. If you are a big salad eater then add some shredded cheese to your salad, or some protein. Add a banana to your breakfast or enjoy peanut butter on toast or crackers. There are a great many ways to add calories here and there throughout the day and in doing so you will be boosting your caloric intake without having to turn your life upside down.

You will want to avoid drinking too much of anything prior to eating. The reason for this is that liquids create a false sense of fullness in the stomach. If you fill your stomach with water you will be eliminated space for your food. Since your goal is to increase your caloric intake you should avoid this occurrence.

Healthy Weight Gain Step 5: FIND AN APPETITE BOOSTER

An appetite booster is a supplement that will help you to feel hungry when you are more natural inclined to feel full. This does not mean you will become an insatiable eating machine but it will give you that extra edge when it comes to keeping up with the additional calories in your weight gaining diet plan.

Healthy Weight Gain Step 6: BUILD MUSCLE

Any healthy weight gain plan will include weight training. This does not imply that you need to become a gym rat or work toward bench pressing a car. But you should use simple weights and work out your muscle groups in order to build muscle. This will add to your weight on the scale and to the overall look of a healthier and fuller you. Avoid too much cardio as it will cause calorie deficits and weight loss. Low-intensity, 20 minute cardio, such as walks, are your best bet.

How To: Hourglass Figure

People believe that if someone has the coveted hourglass figure that the person was born with it. While to an extent that may true, it is not the case for everyone. It is possible to create that silhouette, or at least something similar, with a little bit of abdominal work and careful eating.

The muscle that you want to focus on when you are working your abs is the transversus  abdominis. That is the muscle that goes around your waist and can pull it in if you strengthen it. If you are not much for going to the gym, there are some other exercises that you can do. One is easy and can be done at home before you get dressed in the morning. Kneel on all fours, exhale, suck in your bellybutton to your spine and hold for the count of ten then inhale. Repeat this ten times. After you do this work out, you will feel like you have laughed too much because that is the same muscle that is used.

When trying to eat carefully, remember that it still involves eating. What you want to do is go to the gym, talk with a trainer, and get a personalized meal plan. That is a plan that is designed specifically for your body mass index and physical composition and lifestyle. That means that it will be the most effective way for you to lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle. One of the most important notes for eating is that it is crucial to eat the serving size and no more or less.

When we wake up and get ready, there is always that glance in the mirror to make sure you look great. Heading out the door for any reason means you will encounter other people and you always want to look nice. It is important that you do take some time to get ready every day and to make sure you are looking nice. What is your morning ritual? What are some of the things that you do to make sure you look great? Here are our favorite tips for looking great everyday:

  1. Shower! You always look and feel better after a shower. When you shower you are able to wash all the dirt and other things off your body from the day before or night. It does help to rejuvenate you and it’s a must-do item on your getting ready checklist if you want your co-workers to enjoy sitting by you!
  2. Lotion and deodorant. Depending upon where you live, lotion might be a necessity and your skin can dry out. No matter what you need to apply deodorant to help with that underarm sweating you can suffer from. Stress can creep up at any moment and will lead you to deal with excessive sweating and your deodorant can prevent you from smelling pretty bad! Keep some in your glove box just in case you forget to apply it at home, this way you can hurry and run out to your car and apply it.
  3. Hair. Take some time to do your hair. You don’t want to run your hands through your hair and call it good. It is a smart idea to actually style your hair to really help you look presentable. This is important for many reasons as it gives you confidence and it helps to make you look attractive to others. In a work situation, un-kept hair can give off the appearance of a slob and could cause you to lose your job! Take the time to groom yourself and look your best.
  4. Clothing. Put on appropriate clothing for whatever situation you are headed into. It is important that you look your best for work and that you wear the right clothes. The same goes for a wedding, funeral, church, the gym, etc. Know the appropriate clothing to wear and put it on. Try to avoid clothing that is tattered, worn-out, and doesn’t make you look great. Clothes speak volumes of the way you care about yourself and the right clothes also make you feel better!
  5. Smile. Want to really look great? Take the time to smile! It will put you in a great mood and it does help you to look better and to feel confident.
