Follow it up with six to eight cups of hot water about a half an hour after pouring the original mixture into the drain.

If you have a clog already, there are several things you could try to clear it. As mentioned earlier, it is best to avoid commercial drain cleaners due to the corrosion they can cause over time. You should first attempt to pull the clog out or dislodge it through some other means. There is also the option of using a plunger, but if all else fails it is best to call a professional to handle it.
